Yesterday, I attended as a participant the first day of a virtual Flawless Consulting 2, the programme developed by Peter Block to deepen the skills around his Flawless Consulting model. This day was focused on deepening the understanding and skills of the discovery process within a consulting engagement.

One of the common findings for this phase is we tend to rush to conclusions and “solutioneering”. By fully completing this phase effectively we can provide full value to the client and organisation.

Two critical areas are:

1) Explore the full system – Don’t look for quick / shallow answers, rather do a deep dive.

2) Client’s contribution to the problem – This comes about either by what they do or don’t do in terms of their engagement with the project or people involved.

Most of the two sessions were spent practicing the skills, though a multi-stakeholder “deep” case in small groups.
